ROELAND PARK ? A new father in this Kansas City suburb found himself arrested, not congratulated, when authorities allegedly found a brick of cocaine in the kitchen of his apartment.

Police said the 23-year-old man found out his wife was going into labor on Thursday night and called 911. He shouted for help but didn’t say why, police said, although he did say he needed an ambulance.

Police were the first at the apartment. The front door was open a few inches, said Johnson County Sheriff’s Lt. Mike Raunig, so they rushed inside and ran from room to room, looking for someone to help.

Finding the place empty, the officers started walking out until, they say, they saw a brick of pressed powder on the kitchen table, sitting next to scales.

Sheriff’s deputies showed up and confirmed the brick was about a pound of cocaine, worth $10,000 to $12,000, Raunig said. Investigators said they found a little more in the kitchen, along with about $3,500.

“Whoever was the last person out the door failed to shut it all the way,” Raunig said.

Investigators received a warrant to search the rest of the apartment.

About 2 a.m. Friday, the new father and his relatives returned home. Deputies booked him into the county jail.

His name and the status of any charges against him were not available Saturday.
