KU student from China dies after car wreck in Colorado

Grand Junction, Colo. A Kansas University student from China died early Wednesday after suffering injuries in a weekend car accident in Colorado.

Xun Sun, 32, a master’s student in business, had been returning to Lawrence from a trip to visit a friend in California when the accident occurred, said Todd Cohen, a KU spokesman.

Sun lost control of his car about 4:30 p.m. Saturday on Interstate 70 in Grand Junction, near the Colorado-Utah border. Sun’s Plymouth Lazer crossed the median and rolled several times. He was thrown from the vehicle.

“It is with a heavy heart that I extend, on behalf of the university, our deepest condolences to his parents, family and friends,” KU Chancellor Robert Hemenway said in a statement.

Sun had lived in Lawrence since enrolling last fall. He primarily attended classes at KU’s Edwards Campus in Overland Park.

Kansas University: Chancellor, Peru’s leader pledge mutual assistance

Kansas University’s relationship with Peru’s national university received a boost Wednesday from that country’s leader.

Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo in a meeting with KU Chancellor Robert Hemenway expressed support and pledged assistance to promote the collaborative effort between KU and the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos in Lima.

The chancellor met with Toledo on Wednesday at the presidential palace in Lima.

During the meeting, Hemenway noted the work of Bartholomew Dean, KU assistant professor of anthropology, and his wife, Michelle McKinley, anthropology researcher at KU’s Museum of Anthropology. Dean and McKinley have studied the language and culture of the Urarina people in Peru and helped direct the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos’ new graduate program in Amazonian studies. In addition, the chancellor noted that the Anne Sullivan Center, a Lima school to teach poor children with autism or severe mental retardation, was founded by KU graduate Liliana Mayo.

Hemenway was in Peru to receive an honorary degree at the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos.

Veterans: Legion numbers looking up

Tonganoxie An effort to recruit new members to the inactive Lester Hamel Post No. 41 of the American Legion here has proved fruitful.

At a June 19 rally to revive interest in the post, which had 13 members who hadn’t met in several years, 12 new members signed up, said Jim Rogers, a Vietnam veteran who organized the membership rally.

Rogers was elected post commander at that meeting. He and two other members will be installed as post officers at the legion’s next meeting, 7:30 p.m. July 17 at Tonganoxie Masonic Hall, 311 S. Delaware.
