WNBA Roundup: Starzz survive Fire’s furious comeback

? Adrienne Goodson scored a career-high 30 points and the Utah Starzz held off a second-half rally by the Portland Fire to win 86-83 on Tuesday night.

Margo Dydek posted her fifth double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds, and Natalie Williams and Marie Ferdinand each scored 14 for Utah (8-3), which is off to its best start ever.

DeMya Walker scored a career-high 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Fire (4-8), who have lost four straight to Utah. Alisa Burras added 13 points, and Sylvia Crawley had 12.

“Overall, I’m pretty positive because we were able to come back from a big deficit,” coach Linda Hargrove said. “To come back against a team like Utah is something we can build on.”

The Starzz led 73-60 with 5:50 remaining and looked to have the game well in hand. But Portland switched to a full-court press and held the Starzz without a field goal the rest of the way.

The Fire trailed by three with 58.5 seconds left but couldn’t overcome clutch free-throw shooting by Utah.

Liberty 74, Fever 55

New York Crystal Robinson scored a season-high 24 points as the Liberty shut down Tamika Catchings.

Rockers 71, Sol 50

Cleveland Jennifer Rizzotti scored a career-high 16 points and Ann Wauters added a season-high 18 for Cleveland . Rizzotti, playing with seven stitches near her left eye, also made a career-high four three-pointers for the Rockers.

Comets 73, Lynx 55

Minneapolis Sheryl Swoopes and Tina Thompson each scored 18 points to lead Houston.

Sparks 89, Mercury 66

Los Angeles Mwadi Mabika scored 20 points to lead Los Angeles. Lisa Leslie added 13 points and 12 rebounds, and Nikki Teasley had a career-high nine assists for the Sparks (10-1), who extended their regular-season home winning streak to 27 games. Tamecka Dixon scored eight of her 11 points during an 18-2 run that gave Los Angeles a 23-6 lead with 12:59 left in the first half.

Washington 87, Sacramento 86, 2OT

Sacramento, Calif. Chamique Holdsclaw hit a long three-pointer with 7.1 seconds left in the second overtime for Washington. Holdsclaw finished with 29 points and a career-high 21 rebounds while Stacey Dales-Schuman added a career-high 26 before fouling out.
