Student critical after crash in Colorado

? A Kansas University student from China was in critical condition late Tuesday after a weekend car accident in Colorado.

Xun Sun, 32, lost control of his car about 4:30 p.m. Sunday on Interstate 70 in Grand Junction. The car crossed the median and rolled several times.

“I don’t know if he fell asleep, got distracted or what, but he just lost control,” said Sgt. Paul Frey of the Grand Junction Police Department.

Frey said Sun wasn’t wearing his lap belt, only his automatic shoulder harness. He was thrown from his Plymouth Lazer.

Frey said alcohol was not suspected in the accident, and Sun was traveling the speed limit, which is 75 mph.

A spokesman for St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction said Sun remained in the intensive care unit with severe head injuries.

Sun, a master’s student in business, was returning to Lawrence from a trip to visit a friend in Colorado, said Todd Cohen, a KU spokesman.

Cohen said Joe Potts, director of international student services, was traveling to Colorado to be with Sun. KU officials also are making arrangements for Sun’s mother and aunt to fly from China.

Sun has been enrolled at KU since fall 2001.

He is the second KU student involved in a major car accident since spring classes adjourned.

Cassandra Black, 20, was killed May 21 while driving in her hometown, Columbia, Mo. She was a fine arts and architecture major.
