Lakeside: Bowyer and Davis battle from back and win

? Luck appeared to take a vacation during qualifying heats for both NASCAR Modified defending champion Clint Bowyer, Emporia, Kan., and Grand National NASCAR Shortrack Series national point leader Kerry Davis, Kansas City, Mo.

Both drivers would register a heat race DNF to start the evening at Lakeside Speedway, forcing them to start dead last in their respective features.

Davis’s eight-for-eight win streak looked to be in jeopardy when the field of 26 took green, but with masterful use of 10 cautions he found himself quickly on the leader, Parkville, Mo.’s Terry Bruner, by lap 14.

With a textbook slide for life through turns three and four, Davis gained the lead for the remaining 6 circuits on his way to keeping his record intact.

Current NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Regional leader Clint Bowyer, Emporia, Kan., started from a tailback starting position, but continually picked his way forward.

On the 18th of the 25 laps posted, Bowyer got a run on leader Tom Charles, Bonner Springs, Kan., down the backstretch that led to a successful pass on the bottom of three and four. Charles appeared to be sitting still. Bowyer maintained a comfortable lead on his way to his fourth win of the season.

The O’Reilly Midwest Sprint Car Series ran in place of the Factory Stocks and put on quite a show. Topeka’s Chris Morgan dominated the field as he had all but the top five lapped by the halfway point. It would take the last of three cautions to keep him from lapping the rest of the field on his way to his first win at Lakeside Speedway.
