1 dies, 1 injured in wreck

A man was killed and another injured after a one-vehicle accident about 5:30 a.m. Sunday southeast of Baldwin.

The vehicle was southbound on East 2000 Road, a gravel road, about one-fifth of a mile north of North 100 Road when the driver apparently lost control. The vehicle left the road on the east side and overturned.

The driver was taken to a Kansas City area hospital by LifeNet. The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.

Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating the cause of the accident. The identities of the two men are not being released, pending notification of family members.

Commissioners to review Wells Overlook proposal

Several volunteer groups have stepped forward and offered services to improve Wells Overlook Park, and the Douglas County Commission will discuss that project during its meeting today.

The groups are willing to clean up the park south of Lawrence, paint what needs to be painted and cut unwanted brush, Commissioner Jere McElhaney said.

Commissioners also will discuss parking options near the Douglas County Courthouse and the Judicial & Law Enforcement Center.

Other business on the agenda for the 9 a.m. meeting:

Review and approve the 7th Judicial District’s Juvenile Justice Authority grant application.

Consider a conditional-use permit request for a machinery storage building on the southeast corner of North 800 and East 1500 roads.

Consider a request for authorization to negotiate proposals received for VHF base radio repeaters and control stations.

Consider a contract for microsurfacing County Road 1061.
