Glasscock dowry decreases as Stovall donors seek refund

? The “bunch” of money Kent Glasscock promised to bring along when he joined Wichita Mayor Bob Knight’s gubernatorial ticket may be getting smaller.

Glasscock had expected to transfer money he had raised during his short-lived bid for governor and a stint as a lieutenant-governor candidate during Atty. Gen. Carla Stovall’s brief run for governor.

But Stovall-Glasscock campaign treasurer Gregory Mathena has stopped any transfer of funds after receiving numerous requests from donors wanting their money back.

In a letter to the state’s ethics commission dated June 17, Mathena said he had frozen the account because of “numerous requests” from contributors. The Topeka Capital-Journal obtained a copy of the letter.

“I have directed all apportionment of the campaign funds be halted and the accounts be held until the refund requests can be considered,” Mathena wrote.

In April, the ethics commission ruled that Glasscock was entitled to keep a portion of the money the Stovall-Glasscock ticket raised.

Kelly Levi, a spokeswoman for the Knight-Glasscock ticket, told The Capital-Journal on Tuesday that the campaign has been working closely with the ethics commission.

Levi said some donors had requested their money back but declined to give an exact figure. Levi, who managed the Stovall-Glasscock campaign, said that campaign was working to make the refunds in a timely manner.

“The ethics commission has advised us we need to pay all our bills first,” she said.

Glasscock began campaigning for governor last year but dropped out of the race to run with Stovall, who then became the choice of many moderates. But Stovall quit the race in April, saying she didn’t have the desire to run statewide.

After Stovall quit, Glasscock said he intended to “re-engage” in the governor’s race.

He delayed an announcement after he underwent a procedure to clear an artery to his heart. Then, Glasscock joined the Knight ticket

Knight faces three other challengers in the Republican primary. They are State Treasurer Tim Shallenburger, Senate President Dave Kerr, and former Eudora schools superintendent Dan Bloom.

Insurance Commissioner Kathleen Sebelius is the only announced Democratic candidate. Also on the ballot for the Nov. 5 general election are Reform Party candidate Ted Pettibone and Libertarian Dennis Hawver.
