Abbott to have surgery, miss rest of season

Seattle Seattle Mariners pitcher Paul Abbott has a torn labrum in his right shoulder and will undergo season-ending surgery later this month.

An MRI exam revealed the tear in his throwing shoulder, the team said Tuesday. Abbott will have surgery June 27. It typically takes between 10 and 12 months to recover from the surgery, the Mariners said.

Abbott, 34, went on the disabled list May 7 with pain in the shoulder. He appeared in seven games this season for Seattle, including five starts, going 1-3 with an 11.96 ERA. Abbott won 17 games last season.

Estes likely to be fined for throwing at Clemens

New York Mets left-hander Shawn Estes will be fined for throwing a pitch behind Yankees ace Roger Clemens, major league disciplinarian Bob Watson said Tuesday afternoon.

Watson said Estes’ pitch Saturday violated rule 8.02 (d), which states that the pitcher shall not intentionally throw at the batter.

The Mets waited nearly two years for an opportunity to settle the score with Clemens, who beaned Mike Piazza in July 2000 and chucked a broken bat in his direction during the World Series later that year.

Jenkins out for season after injuring ankle

Milwaukee Geoff Jenkins could miss the rest of the season after dislocating his right ankle and tearing tendons in the joint. An MRI on Tuesday confirmed that there were no fractures or torn tendons. Jenkins was placed in a cast and will be evaluated in two weeks. The Brewers placed Jenkins on the 15-day DL Tuesday and purchased the contract of outfielder Ryan Thompson from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Jenkins’ injury was eerily reminiscent of the season-ending ankle injury Pittsburgh catcher Jason Kendall sustained in 1999.
