Old Home Town – 25 and 40 years ago today

IN 1977 – The area south of McLouth was being combed for three men who had escaped from the Fort Leavenworth Disciplinary Barracks. They were considered dangerous, and local residents had been warned to report any strangers immediately.

Lawrence Fire Department investigators had closed their probe of the $450,000 Royal College Shoe Store fire here, stating that the cause of the fire was still unknown.

IN 1962 – John Vogel, 46, local farmer-businessman and a tireless civic leader, filed as a candidate for the Kansas House of Representatives on the Republican ticket. Vogel won election and became one of the most effective and best-known legislators the area had ever seen.
