Jeter’s status day-to-day after X-rays are negative

New York Shortstop Derek Jeter has a bruised left knee and his playing status was listed as day-to-day by the New York Yankees.

X-rays on the knee were negative, the Yankees said Monday. The Yankees had the day off and open a series at Colorado tonight.

Jeter bruised his knee when he fouled off a pitch during the Yankees’ 3-2 loss to the New York Mets on Sunday night. He left the game in the eighth inning.

Hernandez throws in intrasquad game

Tampa, Fla. New York Yankees right-hander Orlando Hernandez, on the disabled list with an upper back injury, allowed one run in four innings in a minor league intrasquad game Monday.

Hernandez allowed three hits and struck out four, throwing 46 of 56 pitches for strikes.

Barring any problems, Hernandez could pitch again in a minor league game later in the week.

Twins’ Reed to miss start

Minneapolis Minnesota Twins right-hander Rick Reed was scratched from his scheduled start Wednesday against the New York Mets after cutting his thumb while opening a suitcase.

Ex-manager Adair dies

Bay Minnette, Ala. Bill Adair, who managed the Chicago White Sox for 10 games in 1970 and was Hank Aaron’s first minor league manager, died Monday. He was 89.

Ex-Bosox skipper Hobson undergoes heart surgery

Nashua, N.H. Former Boston Red Sox player and manager Butch Hobson had heart surgery after he complained of tightness in his chest.

Hobson, currently the manager of the Nashua Pride of the independent Atlantic League, had angioplasty surgery on Friday in which a stent was inserted to clear a blocked artery. Team officials said Hobson was released Saturday and was recovering at home.
