World Cup: Senegal, Spain reach quarterfinals

Sweden, Ireland ousted during Sunday's soccer games

? Senegal and Spain worked overtime Sunday to reach the quarterfinals of the World Cup.

Actually, the Spaniards had to go beyond that, beating Ireland 3-2 in a penalty-kick shootout after a 1-1 tie.

Senegal, the newcomer that stunned defending champion France in the opener, advanced when Henri Camara scored his second goal of the game in the 14th minute of extra time for a 2-1 victory over Sweden. That made the Dakar Lions the second team from Africa to make it so far Cameroon did it in 1990.

“We knew that it would be a very hard match, a match of warriors,” said El Hadji Diouf, the African player of the year. “We showed once more that we are a band of brothers, a band of friends.”

Those brothers, those friends, will meet Japan or Turkey on Saturday.

“We’re not here to be tourists,” Camara said. “We won today and now we must forget this and concentrate on the upcoming match.”

Spain earned a place against South Korea or Italy when Iker Casillas made two saves in the penalty shootout. He also stopped a penalty kick in regulation, but was beaten by Robbie Keane in the 90th minute on yet another penalty kick.

“It’s all a matter of luck,” Casillas said. “Sometimes you block some, sometimes you don’t.”

Spain appeared to have its quarterfinal berth locked up on Fernando Morientes’ 8th-minute goal. But just before the end of regulation time, Fernando Hierro was caught holding down Niall Quinn by the shirt in the penalty area during a free kick.

Keane made it 1-1 with a penalty shot, then the Spaniards survived 30 minutes of extra time with just 10 men. They had used their limit of three substitutes before David Albelda was hurt.

Casillas, who stopped Ian Harte’s penalty kick in the second half, blocked shots by David Connolly and Kevin Kilbane in the shootout. Hierro and Baraja scored for Spain before Gaizka Mendieta won it with a shot down the middle as keeper Shay Given dived right.

“Our team showed its strength by holding on despite playing with only 10 to win,” Casillas said. “We deserved the win, and we’re going to celebrate it.”

The Irish were having none of any negative talk.

“What I’ve seen during the whole World Cup is a spirit I’ve never seen on a side before,” Quinn said. “It’s very important to take positive stuff from what’s happened here.”

The United States could make another positive statement today against regional rival Mexico in Jeonju, South Korea. The winner plays Germany on Friday.

Also today, it was Brazil against Belgium in Kobe, Japan.

For Senegal’s game-winning goal in Oita, Japan, Camara sent an 18-yard left-footed kick caroming in off the goalpost after taking a back-heeled pass from Pape Thiaw. He also scored the equalizer in the 37th minute after Henrik Larsson put Sweden ahead in the 11th with his third goal of the World Cup.

“I think we have really done something by beating France, tying with Denmark and beating Sweden,” coach Bruno Metsu said.

Back home in Dakar, flag-draped Senegalese ran into churches to offer thanks.

“This is a great day for Senegal, and a great day for Africa. The boys are great!” cried Pape Demba Sow, a fan in Senegal.
