Women’s Tours: West triumphs in playoff

? Lori West gained back in a playoff what she had given away.

West three-putted the final three holes of regulation in losing a two-stroke lead, then rolled in a 3-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole Sunday to win the Hy-Vee Classic.

The victory in the senior event was the first professional win for the 46-year-old West, who has played the LPGA Tour since 1984.

“The exciting part is when you screw up and then win,” said West, who earned $75,000. “That’s just great. You can’t beat that.”

West finished with a 2-under 70 to join Patty Sheehan (71), Jan Stephenson (70) and Elaine Crosby (68) at 4-under 140 after 36 holes on the Hyperion Field Club north of Des Moines.

Sheehan, paired with West, also had a chance to win in regulation, but she, too, three-putted on 18, leaving her birdie putt 4 feet short, then pushing her next shot 2 feet past the hole on the left.

Walking off the green after the bogey, Sheehan gave the choke sign.

“I was just trying to laugh at myself,” she said.

Ochoa wins first pro title

Decatur, Ill. Lorena Ochoa won her first pro title Sunday, closing with a 5-under 65 for a four-stroke victory over Amy Dahle in the JWA/Michelob Light Charity Classic.

Ochoa, the Mexican standout making her third Futures Tour start since leaving the University of Arizona after her sophomore season, birdied five of the last nine holes for a 9-under 201 total.

Ochoa, who earned $8,400, set an NCAA record with eight victories this season and also won the Mexican Open. She has two top-10 finishes in three LPGA Tour starts this year.
