Walter Vernon Cormack

? Graveside services for Walter Vernon Cormack, 92, Topeka, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Rossville Cemetery.

Mr. Cormack died Wednesday, June 12, 2002, at his home.

He was born Oct. 2, 1909, in Rossville, the son of Seth Joel and Jessie (Shipley) Cormack.

He grew up in Rossville and graduated from Rossville High School in 1927. He earned a bachelor of arts degree from Washburn University in 1950 and a master of arts degree from Kansas University in 1951.

Mr. Cormack began his teaching career at 17 at West Union School in western Shawnee County. He also taught at Prairie Vale and West Indianola. After serving in the U.S. Air Corps during World War II, he taught at Quincy Elementary, Topeka. He was principal at Seabrook, Clay and Lafayette elementary schools in Topeka. He retired in 1973.

He was a member of University United Methodist Church, Topeka, Kansas Teachers Assn., National Teachers Assn., Elementary School Principals Assn., and Masonic Lodge.

He married Leona Williamson on Aug. 9, 1934, in Nebraska City, Neb. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include two sons, Michael, Lawrence, and Thomas, Topeka; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A daughter, Judith Roberson, died in 1991.

The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Piper-Verschelden Funeral Home, St. Marys.
