World Cup Soccer: Portugal routs Poles

? Pauleta scored three goals in a convincing 4-0 win Monday, helping Portugal settle a 16-year-old score with Poland in the World Cup.

Portugal and Poland last met in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, both nation’s most recent appearance in the tournament. Poland beat Portugal 1-0 and knocked the Portuguese from the competition.

The Portuguese, who lost to the United States in their opener, faced the same fate Monday. Pauleta proved unstoppable for Portugal, which can advance to the second round with a victory over South Korea on Friday.

Pauleta and his teammates overcame a forgettable performance against the United States and knocked Poland out of the World Cup.

Pauleta scored in the 14, 65th and 77th minutes. Rui Costa completed the scoring with three minutes remaining.

Tunisia’s 1-1 draw with Belgium, thanks to its first goal of the tournament, was just enough to stave off elimination and make it more difficult for the Belgians to reach the round of 16.

Belgium (0-0-2), which had three ties and was eliminated at France ’98, must beat Russia on Friday.
