Florida sinks Kansas City with seven-run 14th – Marlins 15, Royals 8, 14 innings

? Derrek Lee homered twice for the second straight game and the Florida Marlins scored seven times in the 14th inning to beat the Kansas City Royals, 15-8, Monday night.

Lee also scored four runs and drove in three for the Marlins, who won despite blowing leads in the ninth and 12th innings.

Andy Fox hit a two-run double off Mac Suzuki (0-1) in the 14th to break an 8-8 tie. Mike Lowell added another single to score Fox, then Lee walked with the bases loaded his fourth straight walk after hitting his second home run of the game. Eric Owens followed with a two-run single, and Homer Bush closed the scoring with an RBI groundout.

Armando Almanza (2-0) pitched 12/3 perfect innings to get the win.

Lee, who has five career multihomer games, snapped a 5-5 tie by leading off the eighth with his 14th this season. But the Royals tied it in the ninth on Neifi Perez’s sacrifice fly off closer Vladimir Nunez.

Cory Bailey, the seventh Royals pitcher, walked the first two batters in the top of the 12th and both runners scored. Owens’ RBI single scored pinch-runner Preston Wilson, and Ramon Castro’s drove in Lee to make it 8-6.

Raul Ibanez tied it again for Kansas City with a two-run homer in the 12th that made it 8-8. After Joe Randa doubled with one out, Ibanez hit his third homer of the season off Oswaldo Mairena.

Marlins second baseman Luis Castillo went 3-for-7 including a single in the third inning that extended his hitting streak to 26 games, the longest in the majors since Gabe Kapler’s 28-game stretch from July 17-Aug. 15, 2000. He has 13 multihit games during the streak.

Royals starter Jeff Suppan gave up back-to-back solo home runs to Lee and Owens with two out in the sixth, cutting the Royals’ lead to 5-3, and was replaced by Dan Reichert. Suppan has allowed 18 home runs, tying him for the AL lead.

The Marlins scored two runs in the seventh to tie it 5-5. Cliff Floyd, who was hitting only .196 off left-handers, hit an RBI single off Brian Shouse. Fox scored the tying run on Lowell’s fielder’s choice grounder.

Marlins starter A.J. Burnett gave up 12 hits and five runs in seven innings.

Perez snapped an 0-for-10 skid with a bunt single to ignite a Royals’ three-run first inning. Perez stole second and scored on Carlos Beltran’s single, giving him a club-leading 36 RBIs.

Beltran moved to third on Mike Sweeney’s single and scored on Randa’s single. Ibanez’s sacrifice fly scored Sweeney.

The Royals increased their lead to 5-0 with single runs in the second and fifth innings. Perez’s single scored Donzell McDonald in the second, and McDonald’s sacrifice fly in the fourth scored Carlos Febles.

Fox singled home Redmond in the fifth for the first Florida run.
