Youth Baseball Roundup: Raiders take third at tourney

Renegades roll over Coffeyville

? Early to bed and early to rise made the Lawrence Raiders, well, at least third-place finishers in the Fort Hays State Invitational 18-under baseball tournament.

Playing the consolation championship game at 10 a.m., the Raiders rolled to a 12-0 rout of the Kansas City Grays on Sunday in a game shortened to four innings by the run rule.

“We felt real good about it,” Lawrence coach Carl Brooks said. “You play at 10 o’clock, it’s kind of, who’s awake and who’s focused? We were attentive.

“You’re kind of concerned about that in the early game on get-away day with, really, nothing at stake, and that’s something we talked about before bedtime.”

Matt Berner went 3-for-3 to pace the Raiders’ 13-hit attack, and Kyle McManness surrendered just three hits in four innings to pick up his first victory.

Tommy Mangino, Aaron Madill and Andrew Pyle each had two hits.

The Raiders (6-4) lost to the Grays, 5-3, earlier in the tournament.

Lawrence will play host to Ozawkie on Tuesday.
