Expect an announcement this week naming Kansas University’s Nick Collison an alternate for USA Basketball’s Men’s Senior National Team that will play this summer in Indianapolis.

As an alternate, Collison, a 6-foot-9, 250-pound senior from Iowa Falls, Iowa, would attend 12 days of pre-World championship training camp, starting Aug. 17 in Oakland, Calif.

Practices precede the Aug. 29-Sept. 8 FIBA World Basketball Championship For Men tournament in Indiana.

The U.S. team, to be coached by George Karl of Milwaukee, consists of former KU players Paul Pierce (Boston) and Raef LaFrentz (Dallas), plus fellow NBA players Ray Allen (Milwaukee), Antonio Davis (Toronto), Michael Finley (Dallas), Jason Kidd (New Jersey), Shawn Marion (Phoenix), Andre Miller (Cleveland), Reggie Miller (Indiana) and Jermaine O’Neal (Indiana). Two additional NBA players will be named to the team this week. Duke’s Jason Williams earlier had been named an alternate. He and Collison will just practice, not play in the tourney games.

Collison last summer led USA Basketball’s World Championship for Young Men team to a gold medal in Japan. Collison has played for USA Basketball teams five times in four summers.

“Certainly Nick is someone who has been heavily involved with USA Basketball and would be among the players considered,” USA Basketball’s Caroline Williams said Sunday, indicating nothing was official and an announcement had yet to be made.

KU assistant director of media relations Mitch Germann said Collison would not comment unless he is officially named an alternate to the team.
