Paintings reflect America’s jazz music, various cultures

Kansas City, Mo. More than 30 paintings from 30 years of work by American painter Frederick J. Brown are featured in the retrospective “Frederick J. Brown: Portraits in Jazz, Blues and Other Icons.”

The exhibit will be displayed June 16-Sept. 1 at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, 4420 Warwick.

In such paintings as “They Had the Right to Sing the Blues,” above, Brown paid tribute to such icons as Louis Armstrong, Ornette Coleman, B.B. King and Billie Holiday.

Museum hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.Tuesday-Thursday, 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Friday-Saturday and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday.

KU Summer Band to begin meeting Tuesday night

The Kansas University Summer Band will meet from 7 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. Tuesdays through July 23 in room 130 in Murphy Hall at KU.

The band is open to any musician in the community. Conductor is Robert Foster.

One hour of college credit is available.

Patriotic show to feature talents of area youths

Baldwin Auditions are being held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday for Baldwin City Theater’s production of “Our Country Tis of Thee.” Auditions will be at Baldwin Junior High School.

The patriotic show will be staged 4 p.m. July 4 and 7:30 p.m. July 5-6.

Singing, dancing and speaking parts are available for 25 girls and 25 boys ages 6-13. Those auditioning should be prepared to sing one of the following songs: “My Country Tis of Thee,” “The Star Spangled Banner” or “America the Beautiful.”
