Graves to announce picks for regents slots next week

Topeka Gov. Bill Graves said Thursday that he would probably fill three positions on the Kansas Board of Regents next week.

Graves refused to say whom he was going to name. “We’re pretty close. We’re looking at the whole slate,” he said.

The terms of three members on the nine-member board expire June 30.

Former Senate President Dick Bond of Overland Park has been mentioned by high-ranking officials in the Graves administration as a likely choice.

Graves said Lt. Gov. Gary Sherrer who earlier asked that his name be taken out of consideration for a seat would not be appointed. Graves, however, said Sherrer “would be very good” for the board.

Regents whose terms are expiring are Chairman Clay Blair of Olathe, Stephen Clark of Wichita and Floris Jean Hampton of Dodge City.

LHS spirit squad to sponsor car wash, rummage sale

If you need an old cheerleader’s outfit or your car washed, the Lawrence High school spirit squad has it covered.

Gwen Wedd, spirit squad coach at LHS, said the 51 members of the LHS cheer and pom group would coordinate a rummage sale from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in front of the Chesty Lion statue at LHS, 19th and Louisiana streets.

If there is bad weather, the sale will be in the high school’s cafeteria.

Squad members also will sponsor a car wash from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Wal-Mart, 3300 Iowa.

Proceeds from the events will go to support the squad’s activities in the 2002-’03 school year. LHS has three cheer squads and a pom troupe, which support athletic programs in the 10th through 12th grades.
