Cleveland denies Detroit

? Chasity Melvin was an offensive force under the basket for the Cleveland Rockers.

Melvin scored 19 points, including eight on a variety of inside moves during the Rockers’ 29-4 run, as Cleveland beat the winless Detroit Shock 72-55 on Thursday night.

“It was fun to see Chasity impact inside,” Rockers coach Dan Hughes said. “She did a nice job of attacking the basket.”

Penny Taylor added 16 points and nine rebounds for the Rockers (1-1), who turned a 17-16 deficit into a 45-21 lead in an 11:14 span.

“We did not handle their zone defense very well,” Shock coach Greg Williams said. “They were extremely opportunistic on turnovers, really physical on the inside, and went on that unbelievable run. It was pretty ugly.”

Storm 65, Sting 59

Seattle Jamie Redd came off the injured list and scored all of her 13 points in the second half to lead Seattle. Sue Bird had 17 points and seven assists for the Storm (3-1), including a three-pointer with 6:50 left that broke a 46-all tie.

Fire 86, Monarchs 73

Portland, Ore. Tamicha Jackson had 15 points and eight assists and Sylvia Crawley scored 14 points to lead Portland to its first victory of the season. Alisa Burras had 14 points and seven rebounds for the Fire (1-4), while Kristin Folkl added 13 points and seven rebounds.
