KU Football: Olathe North standout to walk on at Kansas

Jonathan Lamb had lots of choices. In the end, he had to pick Kansas.

Lamb, a multi-sport athlete from Olathe North High, has decided to join the Jayhawk football program as a preferred walk-on.

“I was deciding whether I would play college football or basketball,” Lamb told recruiting analyst Jon Kirby of Mo-Kan Football. “I struggled with my decision. I’m a big fan of KU and I couldn’t turn down the opportunity to play Div. I sports.”

It didn’t hurt that Kansas has a respected medical school and Lamb, who boasts a 4.0 grade-point average and was recruited by Harvard, wants to be a doctor.

“He didn’t want to go to a smaller school,” Olathe North coach Gene Wier told the Journal-World. “He had scholarship offers from smaller schools, but he decided to walk on instead.”

Lamb, 6-foot-3 and 180 pounds, was named to the all-Sunflower League team and all-Metro team and was an honorable mention all-state selection last fall while leading North to its third straight league football title and second straight Class 6A state championship.

The former quarterback likely will red-shirt this fall and will play free safety at KU. He intercepted three passes in a game three times in his prep career. A member of North’s 400-meter relay team, Lamb runs the 40-yard dash in 4.57 seconds.

“He’s a very good athlete,” Wier said of Lamb, who started three years for North’s basketball team. “He needs to get a little bit stronger, but I think he has a bright future.”

Lamb took an official visit to Kansas State and had expected the Wildcat football team to make a scholarship offer, but that never happened. He made a connection with KU assistant Clint Bowen, who was a KU walk-on during his playing days.

“He has been through the same thing I went through,” Lamb told Mo-Kan football. “He’s a cool guy and he knew my situation.”
