KAN Film Festival draws record-breaking crowd

A record crowd of 550 movie-goers attended the KAN Film Festival Saturday at the Lied Center. Seventy-five student and professional films were judged during the competition.

A special Independent Filmmaker’s Award was presented to Benjamin Meade for his ongoing film work. Meades’ film “Vakvagany,” opened the KAN, playing to a sold-out house Friday at the Rio Theatre in Overland Park.

Geoff Westra was presented the KAN Bravo Award. Westra is a past treasurer of KAN and the president of FilmFestKC and the Film Society of Greater Kansas City.

Here are the winners from Lawrence:

Open division

Documentary: first place, “Medicine on the Kansas Prairie” (Dan Ginavan, Eudora).

Music video: second place, “The Ranger’s Song” (Dan Spurgin, The Hypothetical Seven, Lawrence)

Original: third place, “Rain” (Matthew Jacobson, Lawrence)

College division

Documentary: second place, “Building New Lives, One Life at a Time” (Patrick Rea and Vickie Goetz, Kansas University, Schuyler, Neb.)

Drama/comedy: third place, “10 Speed” (Ethan Shaftel, University of Southern California, Lawrence)

Music video: first place, “Summer Days by Calsto” (Jeremy Osbern, KU, Lawrence)

Original: third place, “Man Versus Refrigerator” (Jeremy Osbern, KU, Lawrence)

Secondary division

Original: third place, “From Outer Space” (Jon Ulasien, Free State High School, Lawrence)

Intermediate division

Documentary: second place, “Parts of a Cell, Demonstrated through Toys” (Kayla Frost, West Junior High School, Lawrence)

Drama-comedy: third place, “A Little Murder on Palmer Court” (Jenny and Katie Schaetzel, Southwest Junior High School, Lawrence)
