WNBA Roundup: Houston has to rally past Rockers in OT

? Tina Thompson scored 26 points and sparked a Houston comeback as the Comets rallied to beat the Cleveland Rockers 69-65 in overtime Saturday.

Thompson scored four points in overtime to help Houston improve to 6-0 at Gund Arena and ruin the revamped Rockers’ season opener.

Penny Taylor, who led Cleveland with 24 points, made two free throws with 3.4 seconds left to force overtime.

Janeth Arcain added 17 points for Houston (2-1).

Mystics 93, Miracle 82

Washington Stacey Dales-Schuman, the rookie who led Oklahoma to the NCAA championship game this year, scored 23 points as Washington beat Orlando.

Chamique Holdsclaw, who missed two practices following the death of her grandmother, added 19 points and 14 rebounds in the Mystics’ season opener. Shannon Johnson led the Miracle (1-1) with 22 points.

The teams combined for a WNBA-record 53 fouls, breaking the mark of 51 set by Utah and Sacramento on Aug. 19, 2001.

Sting 94, Sparks 87, OT

Charlotte, N.C. Kelly Miller scored 23 points, including a 3-pointer in overtime, as Charlotte beat defending WNBA champion Los Angeles.

Miller, filling in for the injured Andrea Stinson, hit a 3-pointer from the corner with 2:20 left to give the Sting an 88-82 lead in a rematch of last season’s WNBA Finals.

Lynx 63, Monarchs 61

Sacramento, Calif. Katie Smith scored 17 of her 23 points in the second half as Minnesota rallied to beat Sacramento.

The Lynx took the lead when Smith dribbled the length of the court for a layup and a 62-61 advantage with 1:07 remaining. Her free throw with 26.5 seconds left completed the scoring.

Fever 79, Shock 62

Indianapolis Tamika Catchings had 23 points and 13 rebounds in her first WNBA game as Indiana opened the season with a victory over Detroit.

Mercury 71, Starzz 66

Phoenix Jennifer Gillom made two fadeaways in the lane against Utah’s 7-foot-2 Margo Dydek that sent Phoenix to victory over the Starzz.
