KU’s Gooden impresses Grizzlies

Golden State may take Big 12 Player of Year with third pick; Memphis looms at No. 4

? Golden State is generally perceived as the team that could shake up the NBA draft.

Using that theory, former Kansas University standout Drew Gooden then becomes the lottery’s X-factor.

Gooden is one of the most versatile players in the draft. At the moment, he’s heavily linked to the Warriors because they likely will not have the chance to take Yao Ming or Jay Williams.

But no one is really sure what the Warriors will do.

When the Grizzlies looked at Gooden in a Friday morning workout the team left with a general consensus.

“He’s everything he’s advertised to be,” Griz director of player personnel Tony Barone said.

The Grizzlies would be left with a tough decision should Gooden fall to them at No. 4.

Do they take Gooden, Caron Butler or Mike Dunleavy Jr.?

“I’m a top lottery pick, wherever I end up,” said Gooden, who already has visited Houston, Golden State and Chicago. “My workouts definitely have put me there.”

Gooden worked out for slightly more than an hour with forwards Udonis Haslem (Florida) and DeAngelo Collins (Inglewood, Calif. high schooler) at Rhodes College.

Gooden showed he could easily play small or power forward and shoot with range.

“We did a lot of big man stuff down low. We did some shooting, and we did some (drills) where we had to compete. It was a well-rounded workout,” Gooden said. “I’m starting to open a lot of eyes now. My last three workouts have shown (my shooting ability) pretty well.”

The Grizzlies’ scouts did not expect anything less. These workouts are conducted mainly so that the coaching staff can associate the talent with the highly touted names.

“I’ve seen him a lot,” Barone said of Gooden. “You tend to sometimes try to find something wrong with them. You say, ‘He can’t be that good.’ This kid has great quickness with the basketball. There are guys who are quick and there are guys who are quick with the basketball. A guy his size at 6-11, his ball quickness is phenomenal.”

A cute story circulating about Gooden has to do with his good-luck superstition from last season.

After every Kansas victory, Gooden picked up a pair of uniform shorts from the opposing team. At his Chicago workout, Gooden wore shorts he picked up from Oregon in last year’s NCAA Tournament.

Although his shorts weren’t distinctive at the Grizzlies’ session, Gooden seemed comfortable knowing he could wear a Memphis uniform.

“This team has a lot of upside. I just want to add to that potential if I’m drafted here,” said Gooden, who later promised rebounds and solid defense should he wear Grizzlies gear next season.

Bill Duffy, the agent for Gooden, said Friday his client is scheduled to work out June 20 for the Cavs, who hold the No. 6 pick in the June 26 draft. But Duffy said it’s possible that could change.

“I’m confident he will go in the top four of the draft,” Duffy said.

“If we’re pretty sure (on June 20) that will occur, it’s possible we could cancel the workout (with the Cavs).”

There is a moratorium on workouts between Saturday and June 11 due to the NBA pre-draft camp being held next week in Chicago, which Gooden won’t attend.
