Gruber All-American

? Kansas University senior Charlie Gruber placed seventh in a closely bunched 1,500 on Saturday at the NCAA Outdoor championships.

Gruber was clocked in 3:43.86. Donald Sage of Stanford was the winner in 3:42.65. Freshman sensation Alan Webb of Michigan was fourth in 3:42.23.

The seventh place showing guaranteed Gruber All-America honors for the fifth time (indoor and outdoor combined).

“I’m not satisfied because I came down here to win,” Gruber said. “Coach (Doug Clark) and I put a plan together for the race, and I ran that plan and gave it everything I had. I have a lot of emotions running through me right now. I’m taking off the Kansas uniform for the last time, and it means a lot to me to wear this uniform. I’m going to continue to work hard and try to make some national teams this summer.”

KU junior Mark Menefee placed 16th in the 5,000 in a time of 14:42.12. David Kimani of Alabama was the winner in 13:59.30.

KU freshman Brooklyn Hann, the Big 12 champion and Kansas record-holder in the triple jump, finished 17th with a mark of 40-8 3/4. Winning the event was Teresa Bundy of Florida State with a leap of 44-0.

The Kansas men finished with 12 team points, as Gruber picked up two points to go with the 10 points senior Scott Russell earned in the javelin on Thursday.

“It was good to see our athletes come in and compete,” KU coach Stanley Redwine said. “For our seniors, they are all going to be missed. We’re going to keep working hard and continue to improve and come back stronger next year.”
