County officials to tackle triathlon request

Law enforcement and legal issues await Douglas County commissioners Monday morning.

During their regular meeting, which begins at 9 a.m., commissioners will consider allowing Lone Star Lake to be the site of the 2002 Lawrence Memorial Hospital Triathlon. The 17th annual event would take place Sept. 15.

Commissioners will consider a request from Sheriff Rick Trapp to charge triathlon organizers for the costs of providing traffic-control services for the event. Costs are estimated to be $920.

Also during Monday’s meeting at the Douglas County Courthouse, 1100 Mass., commissioners will consider:

l A request from Douglas County Community Corrections to seek a $40,419 grant from the Kansas Department of Corrections. The money would finance the retention of a surveillance officer, who monitors the activities of criminals on probation.

l Approving documents certifying that the county has acquired all property access necessary for the upcoming revamping of Stull Road, west of County Road 1029.

l Approving a contract to cover bridge inspections in the county.

Commissioners are scheduled to show up early for Monday’s meeting. They are to meet in executive session with the county’s attorney from 8:15 a.m. to 9 a.m., to discuss potential litigation and building-security issues.
