American League Roundup: D’Rays drill Orioles

Wilson snaps skid in 6-1 victory

? The Baltimore Orioles bring out the best in Paul Wilson.

The right-hander pitched eight sharp innings to snap a personal 12-game winless streak as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays beat Baltimore 6-1 Monday night.

Tampa Bay shortstop Chris Gomez, center, tags out Baltimore's Jerry Hairston on a third-inning fielder's choice as umpire Jim Reynolds looks on. The Devil Rays routed the Orioles, 6-1, on Monday in St. Petersburg, Fla.

“Well, Paul finally got a win,” Devil Rays manager Hal McRae said. “Just a terrific effort. He was in control, and never really experienced any difficulty.”

Jared Sandberg drove in two runs for Tampa Bay. John Flaherty and Chris Gomez each had three hits.

Wilson (3-7) has earned all three of his wins against the Orioles this season. He allowed one run and four hits, striking out four and walking two.

“It just happens to be them I guess,” Wilson said. “It’s a funny game.”

Wilson hadn’t won since May 12, losing four times with eight no-decisions during the skid.

“I felt like I pitched well enough to win to win a few games,” he said. “I definitely pitched well enough to keep my team in the game.”

Wilson has made 11 quality starts and has 4.02 ERA in 20 outings this season. He had an outstanding sinker, breaking at least five bats during his 119-pitch effort.

“That’s obviously a testament to his sinker,” Flaherty said. “That’s his best pitch, and when he has it, he’s going to be effective.”

Tampa Bay threatened in each of the first six innings, loading the bases three times. But the Devil Rays went 2-for-15 with runners in scoring position, leaving 14 on base during that stretch.

Yankees 9, Rangers 2

Arlington, Texas Orlando Hernandez (6-3) pitched six innings, and Rondell White hit a two-run homer as New York beat Texas. Jorge Posada homered, drove in two runs and reached base four times for the Yankees, who have won 16 of 22 at The Ballpark in Arlington. Rangers starter Kenny Rogers (11-6) fell behind 3-0 in the first inning against his former team.

Mariners 4, Tigers 3

Seattle John Olerud’s RBI single in the eighth inning sent Seattle past Detroit. Edgar Martinez hit a two-run homer, and Bret Boone tied it with a sixth-inning single as Seattle rallied from a 3-0 deficit.

Angels 5, Red Sox 4

Anaheim, Calif. Darin Erstad homered to tie it in the eighth inning, and Garret Anderson drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly. Anaheim maintained its lead in the AL West by percentage points over Seattle. The Angels also extended their lead in the wild card race to two games over the Red Sox.
