Jenny McGee likes to give back.

The 13-year-old has been the Kansas Ambassador for the Muscular Dystrophy Assn. for a year and hopes to reach the national level someday. She wants to attend Kansas University and become a pediatric neurologist so she can make sure no one else gets her disease.

“The doctor who diagnosed me was a neurologist,” Jenny said. “It’s such an inspiration to me. I want to help people who are just like me.”

And next month, she will visit the firefighters that raise money to find a cure for children with diseases like hers. Jenny’s mother, Debbie McGee, said she was still working out the details of the presentations.

Earlier this month, Gov. Bill Graves named August “Firefighter Appreciation Month.” Jenny has received copies of the proclamation and will present them to area fire stations.

Jenny is in awe of the millions of dollars firefighters have raised to find a cure and to help send her to Muscular Dystrophy Assn. camp every summer.

“They just do so much for kids like me,” Jenny said. “They’ve raised millions of dollars in fund raising, and it’s their month to be honored.”
