The National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a heat advisory for Lawrence and Douglas County through 8 p.m. Friday.

The forecast calls for high temperatures of more than 100 degrees and relative humidities near 50 percent. Those will combine to produce heat indices in the 105 to 110 degree range.

The weather service warns that those in the advisory area should avoid prolonged work in the sun, or in poorly ventilated areas.

You should also get plenty of liquids and try to stay in air conditioned areas.

If you must be outside, avoid prolonged exposure or strenuous physical activity. You should also drink plenty of non-alcoholic fluids and wear lightweight, light-colored and loose-fitting clothing and a hat to shield yourself from the sun.

The heat advisory includes Douglas County and the following areas: Anderson, Coffey, Franklin, Lyon and Osage counties, and the cities of Ottawa and Emporia.
