Union OKs changes at Topeka Goodyear plant

? After rejecting them the first time around, union workers at the Goodyear plant have agreed to contract changes sought for a proposal to bring a new line of tire production to Topeka.

In two days of voting ending at 5 p.m. Tuesday, members of United Steelworkers Local 307 voted 842-358 to accept changes that include deferred pay increases and more mandatory overtime.

The proposal had been voted down 459-434 on July 14, and local president Wil Leiker said he was surprised by the extent of the change in sentiment.

Goodyear announced in February that the Topeka plant was being considered for a new line of large tires for the mining industry.

Plant officials say obtaining the new line wouldn’t create new jobs at the Topeka plant, one of the company’s oldest and largest, but would protect the 1,600 existing jobs as well as the plant’s $100 million payroll.

Through the proposed expansion project, Goodyear would invest $120 million in the Topeka plant during the next five years.
