Mets give extension to pitcher Leiter

New York Al Leiter can finish his career with the New York Mets, who made it clear they’re still determined to make a strong push for the playoffs this season.

Leiter agreed Wednesday to an $18 million, two-year extension rather than test an uncertain free-agent market in an offseason threatened with another work stoppage.

“Obviously, that’s a factor,” Leiter said. “But it’s more about me being able to tell my wife, look, this is where we’re going to be. This is some sort of continuity and stability. That was number one. Security is a wonderful thing if you can get it for your family.”

A’s put Lilly on DL

Anaheim, Calif. Ted Lilly, who has made just two starts for the Oakland Athletics since being acquired in a trade from the New York Yankees, was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday because of an inflamed left shoulder. The move is retroactive to July 21. Lilly underwent an MRI Wednesday. The results were not immediately available.

Farmhand loses no-hitter

Lakewood, N.J. Philadelphia Phillies prospect Gavin Floyd threw a no-hitter in the Lakewood BlueClaws’ 1-0 loss to Lexington on Wednesday night, with two errors leading to the run. Floyd, the Phillies’ top draft pick in 2001, struck out eight and walked one in the South Atlantic League game.
