David R. Carter

Private family services for David R. Carter, Portland, will be held in Lawrence, Kan. Public memorial services are planned in Hillsdale, N.Y., and Portland.

Mr. Carter died July 19, 2002, in Northampton, Mass.

He was born in Oxnard, Calif., the son of Robert D. and Nadine Carter, both of Tulsa, Okla.

Mr. Carter spent most of his life in Oklahoma and Texas. He received a bachelor’s degree in fine arts and a master’s degree in music theory from University of Oklahoma, as well as a bachelor of science in mathematics from Portland State University. He completed postgraduate work in spiritual studies at the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology in Palo Alto, Calif.

He was an internationally recognized, award-winning songwriter and performer.

In 1997, he formed a musical and personal partnership with Tracy Grammer. They made many tours and produced three critically acclaimed recordings.

Survivors include his companion, Tracy Grammer, Portland; his father and a stepmother, Charlene Carter, Tulsa, Okla., and a sister, Elise Fischer, Lawrence.
