Backyard wildlife zoo’s latest exhibit

? Homeowners who want to invite nature into their own back yards can get some tips at Sunset Zoo.

A new backyard wildlife habitat exhibit at the zoo features a walkway surrounded with plants, birdhouses, feeders, birdbaths and a bat house. Signs along the path tell homeowners how they can attract wildlife to their own back yards.

“It gives people who visit the zoo the chance to take something home with them,” said Molly Edmonds, an education intern at the zoo, who spent more than a year setting up the exhibit.

Schanee Anderson, curator of education and project aide, said the exhibit helps get people interested in wildlife, especially since they can take an active role.

“This is fun because it is something people can do and make their world a better place for animals,” Anderson said.

Last spring, Edmonds began researching and applying for grants for the project. Last month, 22 youth volunteers spent a weekend weeding, planting, watering and mulching to build the new exhibit.

“I hope folks will get inspired to do this in their own yard,” Edmonds said, “and realize how important local conservation is.”

Edmonds, a Duke University graduate, said building your own habitat is easy and inexpensive. Many people already have some of the necessary tools in their back yards, she said.
