Corrections: Kansas to receive funds to reintegrate convicts

Kansas will receive $2 million to help former prisoners reintegrate into society, Atty. Gen. John Ashcroft said.

The money is part of 68 grants being given by the Serious and Violent Offender Re-entry Initiative, a collaboration of several government departments. A total of $100 million will be given to 49 states, the District of Columbia and Virgin Islands.

“By educating and treating offenders, we are not only helping them improve their lives, we are reducing the chance they will return to crime and drug abuse,” Ashcroft said.

Offenders will receive education, treatment and life skills programs while in institutions and services and supervision as they re-enter the community.
