OPEN CAMP: July 25, Davie, Fla.
LAST SEASON: Made playoffs for fifth year in a row, longest current streak. Offense sputtered at times, including in a 20-3 loss to Baltimore in a wildcard playoff game. That was the fifth straight quick exit from playoffs by combined score of 164-16.
ADDITIONS: RB Ricky Williams. He should be a good match with new offensive coordinator Norv Turner.
SUBTRACTIONS: RB Lamar Smith, OT Spencer Folau, G Heath Irwin, TE Hunter Goodwin, DE Kenny Mixon, S Brian Walker.
WATCH FOR: Coach Dave Wannstedt is hoping Williams can upgrade a ground game that has been a problem for two decades. Williams should take pressure off inconsistent QB Jay Fiedler.
EXPECTATIONS: Combine a ball-control attack with the Dolphins’ strong defense and kicking game, and they’re a contender.
NEW YORK JETS (10-7)
OPEN CAMP: July 26, Hempstead, N.Y.
LAST SEASON: Made playoffs in final game of season by winning at Oakland, then lost to Raiders in first round.
ADDITIONS: LB Sam Cowart, CBs Donnie Abraham and Aaron Beasley, SS Sam Garnes, DEs Steve White and Bryan Thomas.

WATCH FOR: Cowart could be a huge playmaker opposite Mo Lewis; the health of QB Vinny Testaverde, coming off foot surgery.

LAST SEASON: Injuries, salary-cap induced cuts and inexperience in coach Gregg Williams’ first year resulted in worst finish since 1985.

LAST SEASON: Had best regular season in 23 years, but were upended by Patriots in AFC championship.

WATCH FOR: RB Jerome Bettis must return from his second serious groin injury. Was QB Kordell Stewart’s big season after three mediocre years a mirage, or will newly signed Charlie Batch push him?
EXPECTATIONS: There hasn’t been this much Super Bowl talk in Pittsburgh since the early 1980s. With nearly every key veteran re-signed, nothing less than a trip to San Diego will placate Steelers fans.
BALTIMORE (10-6)
OPEN CAMP: July 25, Westminster, Md.
LAST SEASON: Failed to defend Super Bowl title, but made the playoffs. Sputtered on offense because of knee injury to RB Jamal Lewis and ineffective play of QB Elvis Grbac.
ADDITIONS: QB Jeff Blake.

LAST SEASON: Showed improvement in first season under Butch Davis. Started 4-2 but lost five of last six. Seven games were decided in final minute.

CINCINNATI (6-10)
OPEN CAMP: July 25, Georgetown, Ky.
LAST SEASON: Raised hopes by starting 2-0, then lost 10 of 12.
ADDITIONS: QB Gus Frerotte, CB Jeff Burris. Four promising draft picks: OT Levi Jones, FS Lamont Thompson, TE Matt Schobel, K Travis Dorsch.
SUBTRACTIONS: QB Scott Mitchell, TE Tony McGee, FS Darryl Williams, WR Darnay Scott.
WATCH FOR: Frerotte will compete with Jon Kitna for the starting QB job in an offense that scored the fewest points in the NFL last season.
EXPECTATIONS: If either Frerotte or Kitna can give the Bengals a passing attack to complement Corey Dillon, they could make a run at their first winning season since 1990.
SOUTH
HOUSTON (0-0)
OPEN CAMP: July 20, Houston.
LAST SEASON: Coach Dom Capers and general manager Charley Casserly spent the season planning for the expansion and college drafts.
ADDITIONS: Everyone. Cornerbacks Marcus Coleman and Aaron Glenn and linebackers Kailee Wong and Jamie Sharper give the defense experience. QB David Carr hopes to have good targets in Corey Bradford, Jabar Gaffney and Jermaine Lewis.
SUBTRACTIONS: None.
WATCH FOR: Carr to move up quickly, possibly starting by opening day.
EXPECTATIONS: The name players obtained in the expansion draft and the presence of Carr have fans expecting the moon. Capers is more practical.
TENNESSEE (7-9)
OPEN CAMP: July 24, Nashville, Tenn.
LAST SEASON: Injuries tumbled the Titans to their first losing season under coach Jeff Fisher.
ADDITIONS: FS Lance Schulters, FB Greg Comella, RBs Robert Holcombe and Skip Hicks and OLs Jeff Smith and Aaron Graham.
SUBRACTIONS: OL Bruce Matthews, SS Blaine Bishop, CBs DeRon Jenkins and Michael Booker, DTs Jason Fisk and Josh Evans and LBs Eddie Robinson and Greg Favors.
WATCH FOR: DE Kevin Carter is ready to redeem himself after a two-sack season in 2001. Rookie DT Albert Haynesworth has chip on his shoulder, and LB Keith Bulluck finally moves into starting lineup.
EXPECTATIONS: Favorite to win AFC South.
JACKSONVILLE (6-10)
OPEN CAMP: July 25, Jacksonville.
LAST SEASON: Injuries, distractions and blown leads turned a 2-0 start into the team’s second straight losing season.
ADDITIONS: WRs Bobby Shaw and Patrick Johnson; TE Pete Mitchell; DE Marco Coleman; OL Chris Naeole; LB Wali Rainer.

WATCH FOR: RB Fred Taylor’s health will be a key.

INDIANAPOLIS (6-10)

LAST SEASON: Lost seven of 10 games after RB Edgerrin James went down with knee injury. Missed playoffs for the first time in three years. Coach Jim Mora was fired, and Tony Dungy replaced him.
ADDITIONS: CB Walt Harris, WR Qadry Ismai plus DLs Dwight Freeney and Larry Tripplett, top draft picks.
SUBTRACTIONS: CB Jeff Burris, S Chad Cota, TE Ken Dilger, G Steve McKinney.
WATCH FOR: Improved defense with return of injured LBs Mike Peterson and Rob Morris. But the Colts fortunes may rest on James’ recovery.
EXPECTATIONS: If Dungy succeeds in improving the defense, and James recovers, the Colts should get back in the playoffs.
WEST
OAKLAND (11-7)
OPEN CAMP: July 24, Napa, Calif.
LAST SEASON: Won a wildcard game, but lost to New England in the overtime snow game. Then coach Jon Gruden bolted for Tampa Bay.
ADDITIONS: LB Bill Romanowski, DT John Parrella, S Rod Woodson, LB Mike Jones, CB Terrance Shaw, QB Rick Mirer plus DB Phillip Buchanon and LB Napoleon Harris in draft.
SUBRACTIONS: DT Grady Jackson, LB William Thomas, CB Eric Allen, OG Steve Wisniewski.
WATCH FOR: Coach Bill Callahan must unify a personality-laden team.
EXPECTATIONS: The window still hasn’t closed on the aging team and their aging owner. They expect to challenge for a Super Bowl berth.
DENVER (8-8)
OPEN CAMP: July 25, Greeley, Colo.
LAST SEASON: Super Bowl aspirations were vaporized by injuries to RB Terrell Davis and WRs Ed McCaffrey and a poor season by QB Brian Griese.
ADDITIONS: TE Shannon Sharpe, OT Blake Brockermeyer, OT Ephraim Salaam, WR Rob Moore, DT Lional Dalton, LB Terry Killens, S Izell Reese, WR Ashley Lelie, RB Clinton Portis.
SUBTRACTIONS: LB Bill Romanowski, S Eric Brown, OT Trey Teague, backup QB Gus Frerotte, DT Leon Lett, FB Howard Griffith, RB Detron Smith.
WATCH FOR: Return of Sharpe to re-energize offense. If Davis isn’t fully recovered from his latest knee surgery on May 20, Portis could emerge as the Broncos’ next 1,000-yard runner.
EXPECTATIONS: Broncos could return to their Super Bowl-caliber play, but only if they stay healthy and Griese rebounds.
KANSAS CITY (6-10)
OPEN CAMP: July 25, River Falls, Wis.
LAST SEASON: Started off slow in Dick Vermeil’s first year as QB Trent Green struggled. Then discovered running back Priest Holmes, who led NFL in rushing as team won three of last four.
ADDITIONS: WR Johnnie Morton, LT Willie Roaf, DT Ryan Sims, first-round draft pick.
SUBTRACTIONS: WR Derrick Alexander.
WATCH FOR: Morton, Sims, Roaf to make immediate impact.
EXPECTATIONS: Could be greatly improved with Green healthy after knee surgery, Sims providing defensive pressure up the middle and Morton giving them a legitimate deep threat. Vermeil has also had a year to get his system in place.
SAN DIEGO (5-11)
OPEN CAMP: July 22, La Jolla, Calif.
LAST SEASON: Started 5-2, then lost last nine games, missing playoffs for sixth straight season. Coach Mike Riley was fired and replaced by Marty Schottenheimer.
ADDITIONS: LB Donnie Edwards, PR-WR Tamarick Vanover, DT Jason Fisk, TE Stephen Alexander, G Bob Hallen, C Cory Raymer.
SUBTRACTIONS: DT John Parella, C Kendyl Jacox, TE Freddie Jones, WR Jeff Graham, LB Sam Rogers.
WATCH FOR: QB battle between Doug Flutie and Drew Brees.
EXPECTATIONS: Schottenheimer expects Chargers to win, but if OL and WRs don’t come through, they could be as bad as last year.

OPEN CAMP: July 26, Bethlehem, Pa.
LAST SEASON: Won NFC East. Lost to St. Louis in the NFC title game.

SUBTRACTIONS: LB Jeremiah Trotter, LB Mike Caldwell, SS Damon Moore, RB Correll Buckhalter.
WATCH FOR: WR Freddie Mitchell could be ready to become a standout. LB Barry Gardner has to replace Trotter, a two-time Pro-Bowler.
EXPECTATIONS: Favorite for another division title.
WASHINGTON (8-8)
OPEN CAMP: July 22, Carlisle, Pa.
LAST SEASON: Became first team to go from 0-5 to 5-5, and finished 8-8 under new coach Marty Schottenheimer. That wasn’t enough for owner Dan Snyder, who replaced Schottenheimer with Steve Spurrier.
ADDITIONS: Spurrier and defensive coordinator Marvin Lewis. Lots of former Florida players: Danny Wuerffel and Shane Matthews at QB and Jacquez Green, Reidel Anthony and Chris Doering at WR. OLs Rod Jones and Larry Moore, LBs Jeremiah Trotter and Jessie Armstead, DE Renaldo Wynn and DT Santana Dotson.

NEW YORK GIANTS (7-9)
OPEN CAMP: July 24, Albany, N.Y.
LAST SEASON: New York followed Super Bowl appearance with sub-.500 year.
ADDITIONS: Rookie TE Jeremy Shockey and new defensive coordinator Johnnie Lynn.
SUBTRACTIONS: Pro Bowl LB Jessie Armstead, three starters on the offensive line Lomas Brown, Glenn Parker and Pro Bowler Ron Stone, TE Howard Cross and backup QB Jason Garrett.
WATCH FOR: Shockey, who’s expected to open up the offense and Dhani Jones, who replaces Armstead.
EXPECTATIONS: A young offensive line must come together, QB Kerry Collins and CB Jason Sehorn must play the way they did in 2000. A losing record is likely.
DALLAS (5-11)
OPEN CAMP: July 26, San Antonio.
LAST SEASON: Used four starting QBs. Defense was a surprise, ranking fourth in the NFL.
ADDITIONS: DT La’Roi Glover, LB Kevin Hardy, CB Bryant Westbrook plus rookies S Roy Williams, WR Antonio Bryant, C Andre Gurode and QB Chad Hutchinson.
SUBRACTIONS: TE Jackie Harris, DB Izell Reese, C Mark Stepnoski, S George Teague, QB Ryan Leaf.
WATCH FOR: Glover and Williams to make immediate impact on defense.
EXPECTATIONS: Emmitt Smith needs just 540 yards to overtake Walter Payton for the career rushing record.
NORTH
CHICAGO (13-4)
OPEN CAMP: July 25, Bourbonnais, Ill.
LAST SEASON: Won NFC Central and made playoffs for the first time since 1994. Defense was NFL’s toughest to score on.
ADDITIONS: QB Chris Chandler, LB Mike Caldwell, DT Christian Peter, SS Damon Moore, DE Keith McKenzie.
SUBTRACTIONS: SS Tony Parrish, DB Walt Harris, RB James Allen, OT Blake Brockermeyer, OT Jimmy Herndon.
WATCH FOR: Chandler will push Jim Miller.
EXPECTATIONS: To reach the postseason after playing 16 “road” games. With Soldier Field being renovated, the Bears will have to travel 140 miles to Champaign for their home games.
GREEN BAY (13-5)
OPEN CAMP: July 27, De Pere, Wis.
LAST SEASON: Returned to playoffs after two-year hiatus.
ADDITIONS: WRs Terry Glenn and Javon Walker; LB Hardy Nickerson; DE Joe Johnson, RB Ki-Jana Carter

WATCH FOR: Johnson on defense and Glenn on offense, both of whom get to show they’re still Pro Bowl caliber players.
EXPECTATIONS: As long as Favre’s around, there’s a chance to win the division.

LAST SEASON: Devastated by training camp death of Korey Stringer. First losing season since 1990 led to replacement of coach Dennis Green with Mike Tice.

LAST SEASON: Made playoffs for fourth time in five years, but and another first-round loss cost coach Tony Dungy his job.

LAST YEAR: They lost their last four by a margin of 160-52.

WATCH FOR: QB Michael Vick could be a dominating QB, particularly if Duckett immediately becomes a 1,000-yard back.
EXPECTATIONS: New owner Arthur Blank is overhauling everything, but it’s hard to see much more than .500 unless Vick breaks out.
CAROLINA (1-15)
OPEN CAMP: July 26, Spartanburg, S.C.
LAST SEASON: Set NFL record with 15 straight losses. Ranked last in both offense and defense. George Seifert was fired as coach and John Fox hired.

EXPECTATIONS: Still chasing St. Louis in NFC West but with an already solid roster that got better, San Francisco expects another playoff berth.
SEATTLE (9-7)

LAST SEASON: Missed playoffs for the second straight season.

WATCH FOR: With Pittman gone, RB Thomas Jones is the only experienced back. DE Kyle Vanden Bosch, coming off knee surgery, will be counted on to improve the NFL’s worst pass rush. Bryant, Arizona’s top draft pick skipped all minicamps, and will have much to learn.
EXPECTATIONS: McGinnis has the team headed in the right direction, but the shift from the weak NFC East to the tough NFC West will be rocky.
