National League Roundup: Los Angeles snaps skid

Dodgers beat Giants behind Roberts' two-run single

? With the meat of the Los Angeles Dodgers’ lineup coming up short recently, it was left to leadoff hitter Dave Roberts to provide some punch.

Roberts hit a tiebreaking, two-run single to cap a three-run eighth inning Saturday as the Dodgers rallied to beat the San Francisco Giants 4-2 and snap a season-high five-game losing streak.

Los Angeles closer Eric Gagne celebrates his 34th save of the season with catcher Paul Lo Duca after the Dodgers beat San Francisco, 4-2. Saturday was Gagne's 34th save in 36 tries.

Roberts, who entered in an 0-for-10 skid, had three hits, three RBIs and a career-high three stolen bases as the Dodgers won for only the second time in 11 games.

They are 2-8 since the All-Star break, scoring only 23 runs in the 10 games all at home.

“We were destined to break through at some point in time,” Roberts said. “It’s been very frustrating.”

Dodgers outfielder Shawn Green, who has 27 homers and 69 RBIs, is hitless in his last 18 at-bats and Paul Lo Duca, hitting .309, is in a 1-for-15 slump.

The Giants played without slugger Barry Bonds, who sat out the game with a strained right hamstring he sustained Friday night.

Paul Quantrill (2-3) pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the eighth by retiring Tsuyoshi Shinjo on a liner to second to earn the victory. Eric Gagne pitched a perfect ninth for his 34th save in 36 chances.

“That’s probably the worst inning I threw this year,” Quantrill said. “The thing that got me in trouble was the double by Reggie Sanders on a pretty good pitch. That was one of the few good ones I threw.”

The Giants lost for just the fourth time in 12 games.

Braves 4, Phillies 3

Philadelphia Julio Franco had two hits and scored twice for the NL East-leading Braves, who have won five straight and 22 of 28 games.

Braves starter Jason Marquis (7-5) didn’t allow a hit until the fifth and set a career high for wins. He gave up two runs on two hits, leaving after 5 1-3 innings and 94 pitches.

Astros 3, Cubs 2

Chicago Kirk Saarloos got his first major league victory and Julio Lugo homered as Houston beat Chicago.

Saarloos, recalled from Triple-A New Orleans on Friday, gave up one run and four hits in five innings. Saarloos (1-2) struck out seven and didn’t walk a batter in his fourth career start.

Carlos Zambrano (2-2) struck out a career-high 10, but it wasn’t enough as the Cubs stranded seven including the tying run at third in the eighth.

Rockies 6, Brewers 5

Denver Todd Hollandsworth homered for the second consecutive game, and Denny Stark made his second strong start since joining the rotation as Colorado beat Milwaukee. Larry Walker had a pair of doubles and two RBIs for Colorado, which has won three straight and five of seven.

Stark (6-1) allowed three runs and six hits in 6 2-3 innings to improve to 5-0 at Coors Field this season.

Marlins 3, Expos 0

Miami Brad Penny pitched six innings to win for the first time in nearly three months and Mike Lowell homered to lead Florida past Montreal.

Penny (4-4) was winless in three starts since rejoining the rotation following a seven-week stint on the disabled list with an injury to his right biceps. Braden Looper pitched the ninth for his first save of the season.

Pirates 15, Cardinals 6

Pittsburgh Adam Hyzdu hit a pair of three-run homers and drove in seven runs giving him 11 RBIs in two games and Pittsburgh overpowered St. Louis. Kris Benson (3-4) won his third straight decision after losing four straight games coming off rehab..

Mets 8, Reds 7

Cincinnati Mo Vaughn hit a three-run homer, and New York got solo shots from Mike Piazza and Edgardo Alfonzo for the second consecutive game to beat Cincinnati. Reds starter Chris Reitsma (4-8) matched a career high by allowing three home runs. He gave up seven runs six earned and eight hits in five innings.

Diamondbacks 7, Padres 1

San Diego Steve Finley tripled, doubled and drove in four runs against his former team as Arizona snapped a five-game losing streak against last-place San Diego. After being held scoreless through seven innings by rookie Oliver Perez, the Diamondbacks tied the game on Finley’s game-tying RBI triple in the eighth. Mike Myers (4-3) got the win.
