Finger dislocation can't slow Sparks' Mabika in 63-50 victory
Cleveland ? Mwadi Mabika’s finger was a little crooked, but her shot stayed pretty straight.
Mabika scored 13 of her 15 points after dislocating an index finger, and Lisa Leslie had 14 before fouling out with a sore ankle to lead the Los Angeles Sparks to a 63-50 win Saturday over the Cleveland Rockers.
Mabika played only four minutes in the first half when she dislocated the finger on her shooting hand while on defense. But the Sparks’ leading scorer returned after halftime with it taped and scored 11 points in a seven-minute span when Los Angeles blew it open.
“They popped it back into place,” Mabika said.
“I was hoping I wouldn’t have to shoot very much with it.”
Mabika didn’t, but made 5-of-8 attempts from the floor in the second half and two free throws.
“She stepped up for us,” Leslie said. “She was afraid to shoot because of her finger. And we were like, ‘Wadi, still go strong’. She did a great job of getting me the ball inside.”
Leslie, MVP of the WNBA’s All-Star game earlier this week, fouled out with 7:46 remaining, but by then the Sparks had opened a 19-point lead.
Los Angeles improved to a league-best 17-4. Rookie Nikki Teasley had 14 points, seven rebounds and eight assists for the Sparks, who went 3-2 on a five-game road trip and were coming off a 13-point loss in New York.
Starzz 83, Mystics 73
Washington Marie Ferdinand scored 21 points and Margo Dydek sparked a late-game surge.
Dydek, the league’s tallest player at 7-foot-2, wasn’t a factor in the game’s first 30 minutes. Then the Starzz then began feeding her the ball, and she scored 10 and had a key block and assist as Utah (15-7) took command with a 16-1 run.
Dydek scored the first six points of the run and finished with 12 overall as the Starzz snapped a two-game losing streak and handed Washington (15-7) its second home loss.
Utah also received 16 rebounds and 10 points and from Natalie Williams. Jennifer Azzi added 19 points and Adrienne Goodson had 17.
Shock 69, Sol 48
Auburn Hills, Mich. Swin Cash scored 11 points and Astou Ndiaye-Diatta added 10. The Shock (4-17) won their fourth straight at home by their largest margin of victory this season. Detroit coach Bill Laimbeer was ejected after receiving his second technical foul with 4:07 left and the Shock leading 64-42.
Comets 56, Storm 54
Seattle Janeth Arcain’s basket with less than 2 seconds remaining lifted the Comets. After Sheryl Swoopes made a free throw on a technical foul by the Storm’s Michelle Marciniak to tie it, Arcain drove to the top of the key and hit the shot over rookie Sue Bird.
