July, August prime time for bullfrogs

? When the bullfrogs drone through the evening air, many Kansas outdoorsmen think about cool nighttime suspense, with flashlight in hand and perhaps a child or two in tow.

Some of frogging’s finest can be found right here in Kansas. Bullfrogs abound in marshes, ponds and streams throughout the Sunflower State. With the arrival of hot July days, many Kansans avoid the heat by chasing this celebrated amphibian in the cool of the night.

Frog season began July 1 and will run through Oct. 31, but the peak months for frogging are July and August.

Although a valid fishing license is required to take bull frogs (unless exempt by law), and they can be taken on hook and line, most frogging techniques more closely resemble hunting than fishing.

It doesn’t take any fancy equipment to hunt bullfrogs just a light, a cloth sack, an old pair of tennis shoes and access to a local pond, marsh or shallow stream.

Frogs can legally be taken day or night by dip net and by hand, as well traditional fishing techniques.

The daily creel limit is eight frogs. The possession limit is 24.
