Biffle races to victory at Pipeline 250

Madison Ill. Greg Biffle raced to his third NASCAR Busch Series victory of the year Saturday night, holding off Ron Hornaday in the Charter Pipeline 250 at Gateway International Raceway.

Biffle, the series leader who will jump to Winston Cup next year with his Roush Racing team, edged Hornaday by 1.945 seconds after putting his Ford ahead of Hornaday’s Chevrolet during the final series of green-flag pit stops.

Hornaday, who led 141 of 200 laps on the 1.25-mile track, gave up the lead when he pitted on the 158th lap, and was about four seconds behind when he got back up to speed.

Biffle, who pitted on the 152nd lap, took the top spot for good with 31 laps left when the other leaders pitted.

Biela claims top spot for Washington GP

Washington Three-time Le Mans winner Frank Biela won the pole Saturday for the American Le Mans Series’ inaugural Washington Grand Prix.

Biela’s lap of 1 minute, 3.287 seconds, 94.484 mph, just edged the 1:03.312 turned by Rinaldo Capello in the second Audi factory team car.

Polesitter Leitzinger holds off Trans-Am champ

Washington Polesitter Butch Leitzinger held off three-time and defending Trans-Am series champion Paul Gentilozzi to win the inaugural Capital Trans-Am 100 on Saturday.

Leitzinger held off the hard-charging Gentilozzi to win by 1.023 seconds on the 1.661-mile road course in the parking lots of RFK Stadium.

Leitzinger was driving a Chevrolet Corvette.

Kalitta nabs No. 1 slot

Morrisson, Colo. Doug Kalitta raced to his sixth career No. 1 qualifying position in the Top Fuel division Saturday at the NHRA’s Mopar Parts Mile-High Nationals. Kalitta drove his dragster to a run of 4.723 seconds at 313.66 mph to lead the 16-car order at Bandimere Speedway.
