Scouts to serve breakfast at St. John’s

The Knights of Columbus Council 1372 and Lawrence Catholic School Cub Scout Pack 3057 will serve breakfast after all Sunday morning Masses at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 1234 Ky. Proceeds support the scouting program.

Mary of Magdala will be honored Monday with a feast day. In observance of the feast, there will be a prayer service at 3 p.m. Sunday in the church. The service will include a presentation on women in church history, a prayer of healing for the church and a shared ritual blessing. The speaker is Sister Mary Beth Minges. A social will be after the service in the parish hall. The service is open to the public.

The next Inquiry session for those interested in learning more about the Catholic faith and teachings is at 7 p.m. Monday in Simon Parish Center, 1229 Vt. The topic for the evening is on angels.

Unity Church begins world religion series

Unity Church of Lawrence, Ninth Street and Madeline Lane, continues its series on the major religions of the world. Sunday’s subject is “What the Buddha Said,” the second in a series of five studies on the major religions of the world.

Dennis Mercer will be the guest musician. Services are at 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.

Ministry candidate to speak at church

Jeff Clinger, a candidate for ordained ministry in the United Methodist Church, will preach at the Sunday services at First United Methodist Church, 946 Vt.

Clinger, a member of First United Methodist Church, is a recent graduate of Nebraska Wesleyan and will be a first-year student this fall at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Ill.

On July 27, the United Methodist Men of the Kansas East Conference will sponsor a UMM Spiritual Rally at Baker University in Baldwin. The rally features speakers, workshops, music and fellowship.

Cost is $20 a person or $15 for a group of four or more. The cost includes meals, snacks and class materials.

Concert features rock ‘n’ rolls songs

Heartland Community Church, 619 Vt., will have a free concert and sock hop with Ron Perry, singer and guitarist from California, at 7 p.m. today.

Perry has taken rock ‘n’ roll hits of the 1950s and ’60s and set new words to them that reflect his personal changes since becoming a Christian. Refreshments will be provided at no charge.

Perry also will speak and sing at 11 a.m. Sunday service at the church.

Faris Family to perform at Family Picnic

The All-Church Family Picnic that will be held July 28 at West Side Presbyterian Church, 1024 Kasold Drive, will feature the Faris Family.

The group is made up of Bob Faris, banjo, guitar, fiddle; his wife, Michelle, upright bass; and their sons James, fiddle and bass; Richard, guitar; Edward, fiddle and mandolin; and John, mandolin. The group plays bluegrass and gospel music.

Hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs and all the trimmings will be served at 5:30 p.m. in Fellowship Hall. The concert is at 6:30 p.m.

Trinity to honor its deacons

Sunday is Deacon’s Day at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1011 Vt. Special music and prayers will honor deacons Carolyn Graham, Dick Tracy, Rita Tracy and Deborah Burns. A reception will be after the 10:30 a.m. service.

Children age 3 to third grade can participate in the Summer Sunday School at 10:30 a.m. Sundays in the Godly Play room. The school features crafts and Bible stories.

The Mustard Seed Youth Group will lead the worship service at 10 a.m. Sunday at Mustard Seed Christian Fellowship, 700 Wakarusa Drive. The youths will talk about their experiences during a Taking Back Our City mission trip.
