Hmiel ties mark

? Shane Hmiel matched the NASCAR Busch Series record for poles by a rookie, taking his third top qualifying spot Friday at Gateway International Raceway.

Hmiel, who tied the rookie mark set by Kenny Wallace in 1989, averaged 132.080 mph in his Chevrolet on the 1.25-mile track in qualifying for Saturday’s Charter Pipeline 250. Randy LaJoie was second.

“I’d like to win a race for sure, but I’d like to win the most poles, too,” Hmiel said.
