Activities being planned at Pendleton corn maze

Some special events are being planned at the Amaizing Bugs Corn Maze at Pendleton Farm, 1446 E. 1850 Road.

Kids Weekends will be Saturday and Aug. 24. The events include a barbecue, music, arts and crafts projects and farm Olympic games.

A nighttime maze will be open from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. Aug. 10 for a special fund-raising event. Participants can find their way through the maze in the dark. Admission is $10, which benefits the Lawrence High School Marching Band.

Monarch Weekend will be Aug. 17. Staff and volunteers with Monarch Watch will demonstrate how to tag butterflies. One dollar of each admission will be given to the Monarch Watch to support school programs.

The maze is open from 8 a.m. to dusk Monday-Saturday and noon to dusk Sundays. After Labor Day, the maze will close at 5 p.m. through early October.

Health Care Access names new medical director

A Lawrence physician who has been medical director of Health Care Access for 14 years on Friday passed the reins to his predecessors.

The duties of Brad Phipps, who managed the clinical activity of the nursing staff at Douglas County’s only health clinic for the uninsured, will be taken over by Maggie Carpenter of Lawrence Family Care and her husband, Matt Lewis, of First Med. Carpenter has been a volunteer at the clinic for more than a year and also has been on the board.

The board on Friday morning recognized Phipps for his years of service and welcomed Carpenter and Lewis.

Health Care Access has served more than 7,500 uninsured people for conditions ranging from colds and flu to management of diabetes and hypertension.

KU journalism alums in ‘Annie Get Your Gun’

Four Kansas University journalism graduates are involved in the production of “Annie Get Your Gun” by Shawnee Mission Theater in the Park, 77th Street and Renner Road, Shawnee.

Krista Tatchsl plays the lead role of Annie Oakley, and Nicole Perica is a member of the chorus. Dana Lauvetz is the associate producer, and Krista Roberts is the choreographer.

The play will be at 8:30 p.m. today and Sunday. Because the audience is seated on the lawn, viewers should get there by 7 p.m. to stake out a good view. Bring your own lawn chairs, beverages and snacks. Admission is $5.
