Murder charges filed in Coffeyville death

? A Coffeyville resident accused of killing one man in a parking lot and assaulting another man in his home was ordered held Thursday on $1 million bond.

Darrell L. Farmer, 29, has been in the Montgomery County Jail in Independence since he was arrested Saturday night, when both crimes occurred.

Authorities said police were answering a call about a burglary and assault at a Coffeyville home shortly before 8 p.m. Saturday when they received a call about shots fired outside the Plaza Apartments.

In the apartment parking lot, police found the body of DeAundrey Neal, 42, of Columbus, Miss., in the driver’s seat of a sport utility vehicle, authorities said. He had been shot several times.

It was not clear Thursday why Neal was at the apartments, which is where Farmer lived.

Police were told that the shooter had fled on foot. Farmer was arrested a short time later.

In his first appearance Thursday in Montgomery County District Court, Farmer was charged with first-degree felony murder, aggravated battery, aggravated assault, aggravated burglary and criminal discharge of a firearm.

County Atty. Bill Cullins asked District Judge Jack L. Lively to order Farmer held without bond. Lively set bond at $1 million instead.
