Driver was in fatality accident the week before, also in a stolen vehicle

A man charged Wednesday after being caught in a stolen car also was the driver of a missing pickup truck who got away after a fatal accident Saturday, police said.

Adrian P. Keeling, 21, who has been listed with addresses in both Lawrence and Topeka, was charged Wednesday with felony theft for allegedly stealing a 1986 Chevrolet Caprice.

The car was reported stolen Tuesday from the 900 block of Pennsylvania Street. Keeling was at the wheel later Tuesday when an officer spotted the car in the 1300 block of Haskell Avenue.

Saturday night, Keeling was driving a 1997 Ford F-250 pickup truck when it overturned along U.S. Highway 40 west of Lawrence. Syreeta D. Oaks, 19, Topeka, was killed in the one-vehicle accident.

Keeling was taken by air ambulance to KU Med. But shortly after he arrived, Keeling left the hospital without getting treatment, hospital officials said.

According to a Lawrence Police report, the Ford pickup had been reported stolen July 7 from a residence in the 1900 block of Tennessee Street. A 22-year-old man told police he had parked the truck at 3 a.m. and noticed it was missing at 7 a.m.

Douglas County Sheriff’s officers still are investigating Saturday night’s accident. Reports have not been completed.

Keeling has not been charged with stealing the truck.

During an appearance Wednesday afternoon in Douglas County District Court, Keeling’s bond was set at $2,500 on the car theft charge. His next court appearance was set for 2 p.m. Tuesday.

If convicted of auto theft, Keeling could be sentenced to 17 months in prison and ordered to pay a fine.
