Arizona's 5-3 victory over San Francisco gives them half-game lead

? With the score tied in the eighth inning and a left-hander on the mound, Mark Grace was expecting a call back from the dugout. It never came.

Instead, Grace hit a tiebreaking two-run double Tuesday to lead Randy Johnson and the Arizona Diamondbacks over the San Francisco Giants, 5-3, Tuesday at Pac Bell Park.

Barry Bonds hit a solo homer and an RBI double for the Giants, who dropped two games back of the first-place Diamondbacks in the NL West. The Dodgers fell a half-game back of Arizona with a 9-2 loss to St. Louis.

Johnson (13-3) allowed three runs and five hits in seven innings. The lanky left-hander, who had gone 0-1 in his previous three starts, struck out seven, to move within eight of teammate Curt Schilling, who leads the major leagues with 191.

Former teammate Reggie Sanders hit a game-tying homer off Johnson in the seventh inning.

“Obviously you don’t want to give up home runs,” Johnson said. “But at least they didn’t manufacture runs. It would have been worse if they had started stringing runs together.”

Byung-Hyun Kim got the final two outs for his 26th save.

Russ Ortiz allowed three runs, seven hits and five walks in seven innings.

Cardinals 9, Dodgers 2

Los Angeles Edgar Renteria went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and scored the go-ahead run on a throwing error by Hideo Nomo (9-6).

Luther Hackman (2-3) pitched 11*3 innings of one-hit relief, helping the NL Central-leading Cardinals win their fourth straight.

Andy Benes, sidelined since April 16 because of an arthritic right knee, was activated from the 60-day disabled list and allowed two runs and three hits in four innings with six strikeouts.

Mets 10, Marlins 5

New York Edgardo Alfonzo homered and drove in four runs, and Mo Vaughn added a two-run shot as Florida’s longest losing streak this season stretched to six.

Al Leiter (9-7) beat the Marlins for the first time in four tries this season, giving up four runs and six hits in six innings, and Timo Perez hit a bases-loaded triple.

Braves 2, Cubs 0

Chicago Kevin Millwood (8-5) struck out a season-high 11 in seven innings and allowed just two hits, winning his sixth straight decision.

Chipper Jones and Henry Blanco each drove in runs for the Braves, who snapped a three-game losing streak.

Pirates 7, Astros 3

Houston Brian Giles hit a three-run homer and a sacrifice fly for Pittsburgh.

Josh Fogg (10-6) gave up three runs and seven hits in five innings. Brian Boehringer pitched two innings for his first save since last Oct. 4.

Reds 6, Brewers 1

Milwaukee Elmer Dessens scattered three hits over six innings and Jason LaRue homered twice for Cincinnati, which came within one strike of its second consecutive shutout.

Phillies 6, Expos 3

Montreal Marlon Anderson hit a three-run double and Randy Wolf hit an RBI single and pitched seven strong innings as Philadelphia completed a two-game sweep.

Padres 5, Rockies 1

San Diego Rookie Jake Peavy allowed one run in seven innings for his first major league win.

Peavy (1-3) limited the Rockies to five hits as he won in his fourth career start. The 21-year-old struck out six and walked two in his longest outing.
