Daniel R. Jaimes

He was born Aug. 15, 1935, in Ottawa, the son of Jose and Pilar (Nava) Jaimes. He earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Kansas University in 1958, and a master’s degree in school administration and guidance in 1967.

Mr. Jaimes joined the Kansas National Guard in February 1954 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in August 1960. He transferred to the Army Reserves in June 1962 and retired in September 1990 as a colonel.

He moved to Lawrence in 1944 from Ottawa. Mr. Jaimes had taught science and biology, and coached football and basketball at Central Junior High School. He was the vice principal for two years and then principal for 24 years until he retired in 1994. He had taught and coached at Junction City Junior High School from 1958 to 1960.

Mr. Jaimes was a member of Dorsey-Liberty Post No. 14 of the American Legion and Retired Officers Assn., a lifetime member of Reserve Officers Assn. He also belonged to Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks for 35 years and was past exalted ruler. He also was a member of KU Alumni Association, Kansas Association of Secondary School Principals, Lawrence Lions Alumni Assn., Kansas Education Assn. and the Lawrence Education Assn.

He married Patricia Hess on June 2, 1963. They later divorced. He married Kay Reeves on June 6, 1990, in Lawrence. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include two sons, Brian, Overland Park, and Jeffrey, Lawrence; two stepdaughters, Dana Kennedy, Lenexa, and Erica Ryan, Overland Park; a brother, Joe, Overland Park; two sisters, Esther Hernandez, Memphis, Tenn., and Ernestine Muzzy, Lawrence; and six grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials to Hospice Care of Douglas County or to the church, sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
