Police investigate two beatings

A Lawrence man was in serious condition Monday night after being beaten Monday morning by an attacker wielding a hammer at an apartment complex in northwest Lawrence.

Shortly before 10 a.m., a 41-year-old man was approached by another man in a parking lot behind Rockledge Apartments, 711 Rockledge Road, Sgt. Mike Pattrick said. The victim was attacked with a hammer and suffered multiple head wounds.

Later Monday morning, Lawrence Police discovered a second man suffering from a head wound outside nearby Trailridge Apartments, 2500 W. Sixth St. He was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released. Police questioned the man, but no arrests were made.

Friday night and early Saturday morning, police spent several hours at Rockledge Apartments during an investigation into a robbery at Westminster Inn, 2525 W. Sixth St.

Acting on a tip, police that night surrounded the complex and searched an apartment, recovering an undisclosed amount of money taken in the motel robbery, Pattrick said. Clothing similar to that worn by the robbery suspect also was confiscated.

He declined to say whether the robbery and the beating incidents were connected.
