Old home town – 25 and 100 years ago today

IN 1977

Kansas University chancellor Archie Dykes said the university might have to rely more heavily on fuel oils for energy needs because of the concern about a shortage of natural gas. This was despite the danger of oil leaks, such as one which recently had led to discharges in the Wakarusa River.

School Supt. Carl Knox presented to the district board a tentative $12,856,912 budget for the 1977-78 school year. That figure was up 9.1 percent from the year before.

IN 1902

On July 16, 1902, the Lawrence World said, “Lawrence will never completely recover from the effects of its reputation for being slow until an automobile runs over somebody. Who will volunteer to be sacrificed?”
