Byrd blanks Angels for 12th victory of year – Kansas City 4, Anaheim 0

? Grayson Byrd had much better luck against his dad than the Anaheim Angels.

Facing Paul Byrd in a Little League game Saturday afternoon, Grayson tripled. Against Grayson’s dad a few hours later at Kauffman Stadium, the Angels managed only three hits and never advanced past second base in the Kansas City Royals’ 4-0 victory.

Kansas City pitcher Paul Byrd, front, celebrates with teammate Mike Sweeney. Byrd pitched a complete-game shutout in the Royals' 4-0 victory over Anaheim on Saturday in Kansas City, Mo.

It was Byrd’s second shutout of the year.

“This was pretty good,” said Byrd, who walked two and struck out two. “I really felt great out there. I was really glad they trusted me for the ninth. I really felt like I could close the door.”

Byrd (12-6) retired the last 13 Angels batters to tie for the AL lead in wins.

Carlos Beltran homered, doubled and singled to drive in two runs as Kansas City won for the second time in nine games.

First baseman Mike Sweeney also had two RBIs for the Royals, who snapped Anaheim’s five-game winning streak.

Typically, the Royals played good defense behind Byrd, who already has more wins than any other Kansas City pitcher in a season since Tim Belcher won 14 games in 1998.

“I’m 5-10,” Byrd said. “I’m balding. I don’t throw hard. I think the defense is on its toes because they know everybody’s going to be involved.”

Byrd, who also blanked Detroit 6-0 on April 22, said he was called out of the stands to pitch in Grayson’s game.

“I tried to stare him down, but it didn’t work and he hit me for a triple,” he said.

Byrd gave up a single to David Eckstein in the third inning, a double to Brad Fullmer in the fourth and a single to Adam Kennedy in the fifth.

Beltran was in a 2-for-31 skid when he doubled off Aaron Sele (7-6), moving Carlos Febles to third and setting up Sweeney’s sacrifice fly in the first. Sweeney also had an RBI single in the third.

In the third, Beltran hit an RBI single. With one out in the fifth, he hit his 13th home run to make it 4-0.

Needing a triple to become the first Royals player to hit for the cycle since George Brett in 1990, Beltran grounded out against reliever Brendan Donnelly in his last at-bat in the seventh.

Sele gave up four runs and eight hits in six innings.

“Sele really wasn’t pitching ahead like he had been the last couple of starts,” Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. “He didn’t make that many mistakes, it was just tough for him to get back into counts on a consistent basis.”

Scioscia also said closer Troy Percival, who has 22 saves, would go back to Anaheim so doctors can examine an infection behind his right ankle.

“We’re hoping he might just miss a couple of days,” Scioscia said.

Tony Pena was ejected for the first time as Royals manager when he argued with umpire Steve Rippley after Rippley ruled Aaron Guiel out on a close play at first.

Guiel hit a slow roller with two outs in the first that first baseman Shawn Wooten fielded wide of the bag. Replays showed Sele took Wooten’s wide toss and tagged Guiel as he reached the bag.

Notes: Eckstein was hit by a pitch from Byrd in the fourth, the second night in a row he’s been plunked and the league-high 14th. … Beltran also made a couple of outstanding catches in center field. … The Angels also had a five-game winning streak April 24-May 3.
