Russian exhibit looking for volunteer help

Topeka Volunteers are needed to work with the “Czars” exhibition that is opening Oct. 15 at the Kansas International Museum, 123 S.W. Sixth St.

About 2,000 volunteers are needed to serve as hosts and hostesses, audio guides, docents, gift shop workers, office and clerical staff, information center personnel, theater hosts and coat room clerks.

Volunteers must fill out an application. Training sessions will begin later this month. To request an application form, call (785) 232-0000 or (785) 357-4000.

Book group focuses on works of Steinbeck

The Lawrence Public Library will celebrate the John Steinbeck Centennial with a book discussion group, beginning in September.

The lineup includes:

Sept. 4: “Of Mice and Men,” led by Janet Mody, retired Lawrence High School English teacher.

Sept. 18: “Tortilla Flat,” led by Arla Jones, librarian at Lawrence High School.

Oct. 2: “The Grapes of Wrath,” led by Craig Hershiser, English teacher at Free State High School.

Oct. 16: “Travels with Charly,” led by Sam Rabiola, English teacher at Free State High School.

The group will meet from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the library. Participants will purchase their own books.

Family barn dance slated at rec center

The Lawrence Barn Assn. will have a family barn dance at 4 p.m. today at the East Lawrence Recreation Center, 1245 E. 15th St.

Caller is Jill Allen; live music is by Natural Causes.

A potluck will be at 5:30 p.m. Bring two dishes per family, drinking cups and tableware. Drinks are provided.

Admission is $2 for adults and $1 for children under 16. No partner is necessary, but each child should be accompanied by an adult.

China expert to talk at antiques session

Diane Massey will present a “Know Your Antiques” session on the Hall China Co. at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Watkins Community Museum of History, 1047 Mass.

The session will focus on teapots and the Jewel Tea pattern from the Depression era.

There is no admission, but a donation to the museum is requested.
